Jessie Glenn Bowman, 98, returned to his Heavenly Father on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at his home. He was affectionately called “June”, dad, or papaw. Jessie was an Army World War II veteran, who spoke of riding a ship across the Pacific Ocean for 17 days to arrive in Japan just after the bomb was dropped, and became a member of the cleanup crew. He retired from General Electric in Louisville, was a lifelong farmer, where he loved raising beef cattle, cutting hay, raising vegetable gardens, and formerly dairy cattle and tobacco. Jessie was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Mt. Washington for 68 years. He was an avid Rook player, and could be found playing cards around his kitchen table with family and friends most weekends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Henderson Bowman and Madgie Mae Peck Bowman; his brothers, Arthur, Oliver, Omer, Dorsie, Walter, Dennie, Lonnie, and Dewy “Plute” Bowman; his sisters, India Greer and Fern Taylor; his grandchildren, Jay Tennill and Matt Gentry; his great-great grandchild, Emersyn Bogue; and a son-in-law, Rick Williams. He is survived by his wife of 79 years, Alma Shirley Marksbury Bowman; his children, Sue Tennill (Jim), Helen Eustace (Mike), Sandy Gentry (Ronnie), Gail Williams (Rick Hardin), Steve Bowman (Connie); grandchildren, Todd Tennill, Tiffany Eustace Clark, Kyle Eustace, Scott Gentry, Jason Williams, Collin Williams, Sarah Bowman Grattan, and Michael Bowman; along with 18 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2025 at McFarland-Troutman-Proffitt Funeral Home with burial to follow in Highland Memory Gardens. Friends may visit from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday. Memorial gifts in his memory are suggested to First Baptist Church or Hosparus.
