John Phillip Lemke, Jr., 79, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at his home in Mt. Washington with family members by his side. John was a retired employee of General Electric, served in the National Guard, and was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church. He attended the University of Louisville Speed School. John enjoyed coaching several sports at St. A's throughout the years. He enjoyed bowling, watching the Wildcats and Cards play basketball, reading, working puzzles, and loved watching tv, especially Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. John loved his family, and enjoyed spending time with them. John received a heart transplant 27 years ago, and was one of the oldest living recipients. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Lemke; a grandson, Alex; his parents, John and Emily Lemke Sr.; and two sisters, Nancy Whitley and Judy Miller. John is survived by one son, Alan Lemke (Lauren); a daughter, Beth Marie Gupton (Darren); five grandchildren, Saylor, Sawyer, Hannah, Jake, and Jaxson; along with a host of nieces and nephews. In keeping with his wishes, cremation was chosen. The family would like to express their gratitude to his medical team for all the services and care throughout the years, and to his nieces, Jackie and Laurie Whitley for all of their help with Phyllis and John.
