Lester Alton “Sonny” Philpott was born on the first sunny day of the year, January 15, 1939—a fitting beginning for the nickname that followed him throughout life. He passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, the day before his 87th birthday. Sonny retired from General Electric in 1994 after 30 years of dedicated service. He was an avid outdoorsman and a proud member of the Bullitt County Coon Hunters Club, where he enjoyed the fellowship and traditions of the outdoors he loved so much. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Florence (Ferguson) Philpot; his sisters, Juanita Cameron, Evelyn Crigler, and Clydean Mann; his sister-in-law, Mary Philpot; and his beloved daughter, Deborah Lynn Philpott Lee. He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Steven Lee Philpott (Janice); a son-in-law, Chris Lee; brothers, Chester Philpot, Harold Philpot, and Douglas Philpot (Fanny); grandchildren, Crystal Lee Akridge (Mark), Jason Christopher Lee (Ginny), Hannah Philpott Struck (Travis), and Jessica Philpott Spalding (Kyle); great-grandchildren, Cody Akridge (Shelby), Haileigh Riley (Joe), Bella Struck, Jacob Lee, Emma Lee, Lucas Lee, Lynley Ann Struck, Sunnie Spalding, and another baby girl on the way; and one great-great-grandchild, Durham Akridge. He is also survived by Julia Taylor, all of his Shelley Court neighbors, Harry Thompson and a host of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at McFarland-Troutman-Proffitt Funeral Home with burial to follow in Ferguson Cemetery, Brooks, KY. Friends may visit from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial gifts are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
