Mary Ellen (Speer) Hancock

Mary Ellen Hancock, 88, of Shepherdsville, returned to the Lord on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at her home.   She was the former Mary Ellen Speer, past worthy matron of O.E.S. Chapter #183, a founding member of North Bullitt Christian Church, and a member of First Christian Church in Mt. Washington.  In addition to caring for her family, she was a former bookkeeper, accountant, librarian, and teacher's aide.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Willis Hancock;  a granddaughter, Jennifer Renee Hancock; her parents, Robert and Una Bell Speer; and a sister, Vaughn Phelps.  Mary is survived by four children, Debra Lynn Elder (David), Tammy Hancock, Gary Hancock (Jo), and Julie Ann Stopher (Dewayne); a sister, Elizabeth Monroe; six grandchildren, Christine Cox (Steve), Sarah Briggs (Tyler), Gray Hancock (Codie), Henry Hancock, Natalie Stopher, and Ashleigh Stopher; and two great granddaughters, Emma and Lillian Cox.  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at McFarland-Troutman-Proffitt Funeral Home with burial to follow in Hebron Cemetery.  Friends may visit 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday.  Memorial gifts are suggested to the Dementia Society of America.
