Shirley C. Adkins passed away on Friday, February 20, 2026. Shirley was born on September 1, 1943 in Louisville, KY. Shirley was married to Gerald S. Adkins, her beloved husband of 54 years. Shirley graduated from Shawnee High School in 1961, and was employed with General Electric for 36 years. She came out of retirement and continued to work with GE for an additional eight years, where she served with pride and commitment. Shirley was a cancer survivor and volunteered raising funds for the American Cancer Society. She loved bowling, playing bingo and bunco, dancing, and spending time with her family and friends. She was known as the “dancing queen” at the assisted living facility where she lived. She brought joy to all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley “Mac” and Lillian Montgomery.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Tom Black (Deana) and Jeff Black (Leigh Ann); a stepson, Greg Adkins; nine grandchildren, Ryan Black (Melissa), Michael Black (Macey), Stephen Black, Sydney Black, Cadence Black, Thane Black, Joshua Adkins, Christian Claar, and Jonathan Claar; eight great grandchildren, Luke, Belle, Payton, Cameron, Cayson, Caleb, Kaylyn, and Paxton; along with four brothers, Stanley Montgomery, Sandy Montgomery, Steve Montgomery (Beverly), and Scott Montgomery.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, February 26, 2026 at McFarland-Troutman-Proffitt Funeral Home with burial to follow in Highland Memory Gardens. Friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday. For those wishing to honor Shirley’s memory, please consider a donation to Hosparus of Louisville.
